What Is Silk Momme Count?

What Is Silk Momme Count?

Momme is the standard unit of measurement for measuring silk weight and quantity. Silk momme is like a cotton thread count. The higher the thread count, the higher  the quality and durability. However, because the silk threads are very thin, it is easier to reach a higher thread count.

Considering adding more silk to your wardrobe might just be the fashion move you need for 2021. But there are a few things you should consider. Things like colour and style, not forgetting durability and care.

One of the things you should think about is the quality of your silk fabric. Silk quality can be determined by silk momme count or momme weight.

What is momme?

Momme is the standard unit of measurement for measuring silk weight and quantity. Silk momme is like a cotton thread count. The higher the thread count, the higher  the quality and durability. However, because the silk threads are very thin, it is easier to reach a higher thread count. Momme describes the silk’s weight and density. It is used when measuring 100 yards by 45 inches of silk fabric in pounds. Therefore if the momme count of silk is listed as 11mm in momme weight, that means that 100 yards of that fabric weighs 11 pounds.

Like a thread count, the higher the momme, the better the quality of the silk fabric.

What is the available silk momme range?

Silk momme is generally at a minimum of 6 mm to a maximum of 30 mm. Therefore, 6 mm is of less quality than 30mm. This also means that 6mm is much lighter in weight than 30mm which will be much heavier. Higher momme will feel thicker and more luxurious while having a shinier appearance at first glance.

What momme should you use?

The silk momme used will depend on the purpose for which it is used. Silk with momme weight of 19-22mm is usually used for bedding and clothing. This is because while the fabric is durable and will withstand multiple washes, it is light enough not to retain body heat and moisture. Silk scarves are usually made with silk from 12 mm to 22 mm. This will depend on the weather that the scarf will be used for. Summer scarves tend to be lighter, but if you are buying a silk scarf for the winter, definitely get a higher momme count for more warmth.
